Abstract
The authors carried out a survey of measuring attitudes toward the mentally ill in Suseo-Ilweon community. The purpose of this survey was to get basic data to develope planning-guidelines for mental health project including community education.
@ES The results were as followed:
@EN 1) The findings of this survey suggested that community attitudes toward the mentally ill were mixed in nature. Paradoxically the residents of Suseo-Ilweon community showed both positive, sympathetic attitudes and negative, conservative
attitudes
toward the mentally ill. This pattern occurred for all demographic variables.
2) The attitudes toward the mentally ill and behavioral reactions to establishment of mental health facilities in the community varied by life-cycle stage.
3) There were no significant difference between opinion leaders and genenral population in attitudes toward the mentally ill. The opinion leaders had more authoritative and engative tendency to the mentally ill. Familarity with the psychiatric
patients
did not affect the attitude toward the mentally ill and behavioral reaction to the establishment of mental health facilities in the community. Surprisingly, people who had family members with mental illness did not show positive and receptive
attitudes
toward mentally ill.
From the above results, the authors propose that more active commuinity education about mental illness will be needed especially for opinion leaders and families with school-aged children and with mentally ill to remove the stigma and to change
their
attitudes more sympathetic and positive
